The Myeongdong Nanta Theater is a concert hall only for nanta performances. When non-verbal performances (a new performance genre composed of rhythms and beats without any lines) became popular all over the world in the early 1990s, PMC Co., Ltd. developed this new musical genre so as to overcome the limitations of the Korean performance arts business. Nanta is a musical show that incorporates traditional samul nori rhythm and western styled performing arts. The show has a simple back story of four cooks (Head Chef, Female, Nephew, and Sexy Guy) attempting to finish preparing a wedding banquet and playing music with kitchen appliances such as pots, frying pans, and plates. Nanta premiered in October 1997 in the Hoam Art Hall. It started entering into the overseas performance markets in 1998 and concluded a contract for a North American tour starting at Boston in 2001. In 2003, nanta performances in Broadway, New York were well received by audiences. An average of 67% of the audiences of the shows is foreign tourists and the percentage is rapidly growing. In October 2009, the Myeongdong Nanta Theater that can accommodate up to 386 seats was founded on the third floor of UNESCO Building in Myeong-dong and additional theaters were opened in Hongdae, Chungjeongno, and Jeju so as to meet the growing demand. In 2013, a nanta theater was opened in Bangkok, Thailand. Unlike other general theaters, the Myeongdong Nanta Theater's lighting systems and stages focus on maximizing the effects of nanta performances. The theater's consistent change considering the trends of Myeong-dong and its high accessibility are drawing foreign tourists more and more. Among them, Chinese tourists account for the highest rate. Basically, all staff speak Chinese for their convenience. Nanta is put on stage at 5pm and 8pm from Monday through Friday, Sunday, and holidays and at 2pm, 5pm, and 8pm on Saturday. Admission is KRW 70,000 for premium seats, KRW 60,000 for VIP seats, KRW 50,000 for S seats, and KRW 40,000 for A seats.
